India’s First Autonomous Maritime Shipyard to Come Up in Nellore District
In a major boost to India’s maritime technology sector, the foundation stone for the country’s first Autonomous Maritime Shipyard and Systems Development Centre was laid at the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour in Bogolu Mandal of Nellore district. The ceremony was conducted by Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education and IT, Nara Lokesh.
The ambitious project will be developed by Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited with the support of the Andhra Pradesh government. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in autonomous maritime systems and advanced naval technologies.
Strategic Maritime Technology Hub
The proposed facility will serve as a specialized centre for the development of autonomous maritime systems, including advanced unmanned vessels and related technologies. By establishing such infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh aims to position itself as a key hub for maritime innovation and defence-related engineering in India.
The project is also expected to contribute significantly to technological research, manufacturing capabilities, and maritime security solutions.
Foundation Ceremony and Exhibition
During the event, Minister Nara Lokesh unveiled the foundation plaque and reviewed the plans for the upcoming facility. He also visited an exhibition organized at the project site, where various technological concepts and maritime systems related to the project were showcased.
Officials explained how the centre will focus on research, development, and manufacturing of autonomous maritime platforms that can be used for defence, surveillance, and maritime operations.
Boost for Investment and Employment
The project is expected to attract investment in the maritime and defence technology sectors while also creating employment opportunities for skilled professionals and local communities.
With the growing demand for autonomous maritime systems globally, the establishment of such a facility is seen as an important step toward strengthening India’s technological capabilities in this field.
