Manipur Leadership Calls on PM Modi, Emphasises Peace, Stability and Rehabilitation

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to brief him on ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and strengthening unity in the northeastern state. The meeting comes weeks after the formation of a new government following the end of President’s Rule.

Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho accompanied the Chief Minister during the interaction. The delegation discussed administrative measures taken since assuming office on February 4 and outlined steps being implemented to address the after-effects of violence that began in May 2023.

Focus on Peace Restoration

According to officials familiar with the development, the state leadership updated the Prime Minister on security initiatives and community outreach programs designed to rebuild trust among different ethnic groups. The state has witnessed tensions between Meitei communities in the valley and tribal groups in the hill districts, leading to prolonged unrest.

The delegation conveyed that coordinated efforts between civil administration and security agencies are continuing to ensure stability and prevent further escalation.

Rehabilitation and Relief Measures

A key part of the discussion centered on rehabilitation efforts for families displaced during the violence. Thousands of residents continue to stay in relief camps across the state. The Manipur government informed the Prime Minister about housing, livelihood restoration and financial assistance programs being rolled out for affected families.

Officials stated that rehabilitation is being approached in a phased manner, with priority given to restoring normalcy in education, healthcare and essential services.

Women’s Empowerment and Inclusive Growth

The delegation also highlighted initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment across both hill and valley regions. Programs focused on self-help groups, skill development and entrepreneurship are reportedly being expanded to promote economic stability and social inclusion.

Leaders described the meeting as an important step toward ensuring that development benefits reach all sections of society, regardless of geography or ethnicity.

Invitation to Visit Manipur

During the interaction, the Manipur leadership extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit the state. Officials said such a visit could further strengthen confidence-building measures and signal continued support from the Centre.

Political Context

The new coalition government in Manipur assumed office after a period of central rule, marking a political transition aimed at stabilising governance structures. Observers say the meeting with the Prime Minister reflects efforts to align state-level peace initiatives with central support mechanisms.

While challenges remain, officials described the interaction as constructive and forward-looking, focused on ensuring peace, unity and sustained development in the state.
