Telangana to Develop International-Level Sports University for Olympic Training
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to accelerate plans for establishing a world-class sports ecosystem in the state with the objective of producing athletes capable of competing at the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. The Chief Minister emphasized that the proposed sports infrastructure should meet international standards and provide comprehensive training facilities for athletes.
The decision emerged during a high-level review meeting with officials from the Sports Department, where discussions focused on sports infrastructure development, training facilities, stadium modernization, and the establishment of a dedicated sports university.
Vision Behind the Sports University
According to the Chief Minister, Telangana must build a strong sports ecosystem capable of nurturing talent from the grassroots level to elite international competition. The proposed institution, named the Young India Sports University (YISU), is intended to become a major hub for athlete development, sports science research, and professional coaching.
The government aims to create facilities that allow athletes to prepare for major international tournaments such as the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. By investing in advanced infrastructure and training systems, Telangana hopes to position itself as a leading center for sports development in India.
International Standard Infrastructure
During the review meeting, officials presented several design proposals for the new sports university campus. The Chief Minister carefully examined the designs and provided suggestions to ensure that the facilities align with global standards.
The proposed campus will include multiple training arenas, stadiums, residential hostels, academic buildings, sports science laboratories, rehabilitation centers, and high-performance training facilities. These components are expected to create a fully integrated environment where athletes can train, study, and recover within the same campus.
Officials were also directed to ensure that all infrastructure, including sports grounds and training centers, meet international specifications so that the facilities can potentially host global tournaments in the future.
Upgradation of Gachibowli Sports Complex
A major component of the plan involves the modernization of the Gachibowli Outdoor Stadium, one of Hyderabad’s key sporting venues. The Chief Minister instructed officials to redevelop the stadium to meet international competition standards.
Along with the stadium renovation, the surrounding area will also be developed as a comprehensive sports hub. Plans include the construction of an indoor stadium complex, university buildings, athlete hostels, and specialized training grounds for different sporting disciplines.
These facilities are expected to support athletes across multiple sports including athletics, football, badminton, wrestling, boxing, and indoor sports.
Modernization of Existing Hyderabad Stadiums
In addition to building new facilities, the state government also plans to upgrade several existing stadiums in Hyderabad to support training and competitive events.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to modernize the following stadiums:
- Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy Stadium
- LB Stadium
- Saroornagar Stadium
These venues will be upgraded with modern infrastructure, improved seating arrangements, advanced lighting systems, and better athlete training facilities. The upgrades aim to ensure that these stadiums can host national and international competitions while also serving as training centers for athletes.
Focus on Olympic-Level Training
One of the central objectives of the state’s sports policy is to create a structured system that prepares athletes for Olympic competition. The Chief Minister stressed that Telangana must produce athletes capable of representing India at the highest level of global sports.
The proposed sports university will therefore integrate several components essential for elite athlete development, including:
- Professional coaching programs
- Sports science research centers
- Advanced physiotherapy and rehabilitation units
- Performance analysis labs
- Nutrition and fitness training programs
Such facilities are expected to help athletes improve their physical performance while minimizing injuries and maximizing long-term career development.
Potential to Host International Sporting Events
Beyond training athletes, the Telangana government is also exploring the possibility of hosting major international sporting events in the future. By developing world-class stadiums and sports infrastructure, the state hopes to become a strong contender for hosting events such as the Commonwealth Games or Olympic-related competitions.
Hosting international events would not only boost the state’s sporting reputation but also generate tourism, investment, and global attention for Telangana.
Officials Present at the Review Meeting
The review meeting was attended by several senior government officials and representatives from the sports administration. Among those present were Minister Vakiti Srihari, Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Sports Authority Chairman Shivasena Reddy, and Young India Sports University Vice Chancellor Dr. Kishore, along with other senior officials.
During the discussions, the officials presented development plans, infrastructure designs, and implementation strategies aimed at transforming Telangana into a major sports hub in the coming years.
Future of Sports Development in Telangana
The proposed sports university and stadium modernization initiatives represent a significant step in Telangana’s long-term sports development strategy. By investing in infrastructure, training systems, and athlete support programs, the government aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that can produce world-class athletes.
If successfully implemented, these initiatives could help Telangana emerge as one of India’s leading states in sports excellence while giving young athletes the resources and opportunities needed to compete at the global level.
