Revanth Reddy Seeks Increase in IPS Cadre Strength for Telangana
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has requested the Union Government to increase the number of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers allocated to the state. During his visit to New Delhi, the Chief Minister met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed the growing administrative and security requirements of Telangana.
The Chief Minister explained that the state requires additional IPS officers to effectively manage emerging challenges such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, and white-collar crimes. He emphasized that rapid urban expansion and increasing population in major cities are creating greater policing demands.
Request to Increase IPS Officers from 83 to 103
Revanth Reddy informed the Union Home Minister that after the formation of Telangana, the first cadre review was conducted in 2016. The next review, which was scheduled for 2021, was delayed and eventually carried out only in 2025.
During that review, Telangana was allocated only seven additional IPS officers. The Chief Minister stated that the current strength of IPS officers in the state stands at 83 and requested that it be increased to 103 to meet future policing requirements.
He also urged the Centre to conduct the third cadre review in the scheduled year of 2026 without delay so that the state's growing needs can be addressed in a timely manner.
Expansion of Police Commissionerates
The Chief Minister highlighted that major urban regions including Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri are witnessing significant population growth. Additionally, plans for a new “Future City” and administrative restructuring of existing police commissionerates are expected to increase the demand for senior police officers.
In this context, he stressed that additional IPS officers are essential to ensure effective law enforcement, administrative supervision, and public safety.
Discussion on Maoist Surrenders
During the meeting, Revanth Reddy also briefed the Union Home Minister about the recent surrender of Maoist leaders in Telangana. He said that several senior Maoist leaders have chosen to surrender and return to normal life in recent months.
According to the Chief Minister, a total of 591 Maoists have laid down their arms and joined the mainstream over the past two years. The state government is providing rehabilitation and financial assistance to those who surrender in accordance with government guidelines.
He informed Amit Shah that the Telangana police have undergone significant improvements in policing strategies and operational effectiveness over the past two years.
Request for Development Support
The Chief Minister also requested the Union Government to extend financial support for development initiatives in backward regions of the state. He said such assistance would help accelerate infrastructure growth and improve living standards in underdeveloped areas.
Several senior officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the meeting, including Principal Secretary V. Sheshadri, Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy, Intelligence Additional DGP Vijay Kumar, and SIB IG B. Sumathi.
The meeting focused on strengthening policing infrastructure, addressing internal security concerns, and ensuring that Telangana receives adequate administrative resources to meet its growing governance needs.
