Does HPV Vaccine Affect Fertility? Centre Issues Clarification
Amid growing awareness about cervical cancer prevention, the Union Government has been providing the HPV vaccine free of cost to 14-year-old girls. However, misinformation circulating on social media has raised concerns about its impact on fertility and menstrual health.
No Impact on Fertility or Menstrual Cycle
The Union Health Ministry has categorically clarified that claims suggesting the HPV vaccine reduces fertility or disrupts menstrual cycles are baseless. According to the Ministry, there is no scientific evidence supporting such allegations.
Health officials emphasized that the vaccine is safe and has undergone rigorous clinical evaluation before approval.
Vaccination During Periods is Safe
The Ministry further stated that girls can receive the HPV vaccine even during their menstrual cycle. There is no medical restriction preventing vaccination at that time.
Single Dose is Sufficient
Addressing confusion regarding dosage, the Health Ministry confirmed that a single dose of the HPV vaccine is sufficient for effective protection in the targeted age group.
Focus on Cervical Cancer Prevention
The HPV vaccine is designed to prevent cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women in India. Health authorities have urged parents and guardians to rely on verified medical information and avoid misinformation.
Officials reiterated that the vaccination drive aims to protect adolescent girls from future health risks and is a critical step toward reducing cervical cancer cases nationwide.
