Man Acquitted After Two Decades in Prison as Court Flags Serious Flaws in Rape Conviction
A man who spent more than 20 years in prison for a rape conviction was acquitted by the Allahabad High Court , bringing to light serious concerns about investigative lapses and prolonged judicial delays in the criminal justice system.
The man, identified as Tiwari , was arrested in 2000 in Uttar Pradesh following a rape allegation filed by a woman from his village. He was convicted in 2003 by a trial court and sentenced to life imprisonment.
High Court’s Findings
In its 2021 judgment , the Allahabad High Court set aside the conviction, citing multiple deficiencies in the prosecution’s case. The court pointed to a significant delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) without satisfactory explanation.
