An earthquake measuring approximately 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar on Tuesday, with tremors reported in parts of eastern India, including Kolkata.
According to preliminary reports, the tremors were felt briefly in several areas, prompting residents to step out of buildings as a precautionary measure.
No Immediate Reports of Damage
Authorities have stated that there are no reports of casualties or structural damage in either Myanmar or India so far. Local administrations are monitoring the situation and gathering further information.
Emergency response teams have not been activated, indicating that the impact of the quake appears to be limited at this stage.
Seismic Activity in the Region
The earthquake comes amid increased seismic activity in the region over the past few days. Just a day earlier, two earthquakes were recorded in India, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
One of these earthquakes measured 4.6 in magnitude and struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands early Monday morning at around 3:30 am.
Details of Andaman and Nicobar Earthquake
The NCS reported that the Andaman and Nicobar earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 9.03° North and longitude 92.78° East.
No damage or injuries were reported from that event either.
Why Tremors Were Felt in India
Seismologists explain that earthquakes occurring in Myanmar can sometimes be felt in eastern and northeastern parts of India due to the region’s tectonic setting along active fault lines.
The intensity of felt tremors depends on factors such as depth, distance from the epicentre, and local geological conditions.
Authorities Advise Calm
Officials have urged the public to remain calm and rely only on verified information from official agencies. They have also reminded citizens to follow standard safety protocols during tremors.
Further updates are expected as seismological agencies continue to analyse data related to the earthquake.
