Nimisha Priya Case: What Is ‘God’s Law in Qisas’ and Why the Victim’s Family Demands It

Nimisha Priya

New Delhi, July 2025 – In the highly sensitive and internationally followed case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, the family of the Yemeni man she was convicted of murdering has now officially demanded justice through what they call “God’s Law in Qisas.” This development raises serious questions about the future of her legal battle—and her life.

But what exactly is Qisas?

Qisas is a form of retributive justice under Islamic law (Sharia). It translates to “equal retaliation”—a life for a life. The victim’s family holds the power to demand the death penalty or offer forgiveness in exchange for Diyya, or blood money.

In this case, the Yemeni victim’s family insists on God’s justice, refusing compensation. This puts Nimisha Priya, who has already been on death row, at greater risk of execution.

The Indian government and human rights groups are now urgently working through diplomatic and legal channels to find a resolution.
